Presidents Theme 2009-2010 Term “Looking back Moving forward” Presidents Installation Speech For a person...for a business...for an organisation to flourish they must look towards the future...while keeping in mind the lessons of the past. Change management expert - Maria Robinson quotes “Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.” For POWERtalk to move forward and create new endings...this organisation needs support, it needs experience, it needs energy and passion. For POWERtalk to move forward it needs promotion and innovation. For POWERtalk to move forward it is necessary for the skilled to counsel the inexperienced. In POWERtalk we recognize that COUNSELLING OR MENTORING as A LEARNING Partnership and an important element for creating a model of success. Where the mentor is a “wise and trusted counsellor” and a teacher and where the mentee “aims to achieve new skills and knowledge.” What an excellent combination? Mentoring is the unselfish effort to encourage others to develop and mature. Mentors will have been significant in all your lives...from your parents to school teachers, coaches, bosses, fellow POWERtalk members, you would all have got to where we are today because of mentors. If you received help from someone to learn, to sort out a problem or to devise a plan, you have probably already had a mentor. It may have happened spontaneously and the word ‘mentor’ may never have been used. An Effective Mentor M - Monitors E – Encourages N – Nurtures T – Teaches And R – Responds to the Mentee’s needs American political writer, John Crosby told us - Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction. ~ For our organisation to continue to move forward we need mentors to step up to the plate and accept the challenge. For those of you with the knowledge and experience...I ask you to consider how you can mentor members at club and at council levels? How can you share your expertise, share your skill, share your knowledge so they can learn to carry POWERtalk forward themselves??? For the Mentees...i ask you to consider what you could offer your clubs, your council if you felt more confident and had an advisor to support you? How you would feel to achieve something you didn’t think was possible? To move forward we must look back at the expertise experienced members can offer. We must encourage newer members who are keen but need that push in the right direction from their counsellor, their coach, to take on challenges. When you are asked to volunteer, to assist...think about how your contribution as a mentor or as mentee could be rewarding to yourself and this remarkable organisation. IN THE END For POWERtalk to flourish It is 100% up to you the member. Janeen Vosper Council 7 President 2000-2010
